“All About Me” Yearbook Learning Activity

United Yearbook is your support system. We understand that each adviser prefers the specific software they use. They must teach the program to their students so that they can understand how it works and use it easily. Therefore, select your software with care! United Yearbook has a fun and interactive way to help you warm up your students to your software while they learn more about themselves.

United Yearbook offers the design platform, PLICbooks, a free resource for current advisers. For all other advisers, PLICbooks can be purchased at our resource store. Whichever software program you are comfortable using, this activity will be fun, practical, and applicable for your students.

“All About Me” Assignment:

Objective: Students share about themselves while using design software practice to create a page spread.

Step 1:

Students will create a layout of one blank page using the design software. Ask the students to set the resolution on their chosen device or app to a high or large file. They can use a smartphone, a DSLR camera, CANVA, etc. to design and apply images/clip art for their page.

Step 2:

Begin with the background when creating your layout. Use PLICbooks or another software to design your background, and upload it to the platform. The background is a crucial piece to tying the page spread together. Each student will pick one font to display their name as part of their design. In addition, they will include a few interesting facts about themselves to make the background interesting and personal.

Step 3:

After the background has been developed, have the students pick one image or clip art as their theme! This image will be larger than others and it must represent their personality. Its purpose is to give peers insight into who they are. Choosing a theme photo gives students the practice of thinking through the importance and critical need for a theme to permeate the entire yearbook. Once a theme photo is chosen, they must incorporate at least 3 additional images to support it. This portion of the activity is an excellent opportunity to use editing tools. PLICbook allows users to double-click on images to activate editing. Students must apply edits to their photos and begin to understand the process. The final layout will show that they have applied editing tools to their photos, and the edits complement the theme.

Step 4:

All the practice will now showcase the fun! Hard work can be productive and creative, so let the students share their artwork with the class! Give them the freedom to express any tricks, hacks, or design quirks they've figured out with everyone else. The more familiar they become with the software, the easier it will be to use and learn from their peers. Be proactive and find the common traits. Most of all, have fun becoming familiar with PLICbooks or the other software.
